Magnolia CMS 4.5 and 4.5.1 are out !
    #1 by gjoseph on Mar 13, 2012 7:25:08 PM

    Hi there,

Finally ! Magnolia CMS 4.5 is available ! Since a lot of work went into the release, as well as byproducts of it (videos, documentation, what have you), 4.5.1 is also already available. We recommend you jump to 4.5.1 directly.

This release provides a big update on templating, mobile support, and security; it's now based on Java 6, JCR 2.0, ships with JackRabbit 2.4, and offers support for IoC everywhere.

To upgrade, you will first need to update your project(s) to 4.4.6. Migration is a though nut to crack on this one, and as such, we are offering three things:
    * bundles - the upgrades are tested. If your projects are "just" a deployed bundle (CE or EE), replacing it with a 4.5.1 should be a breeze.
    * project upgrades - we are currently in the process of migrating our own projects (documentation, forum, website, …); we're learning from that process ourselves and are working on improving migration documentation and scripts we provide to our users.
    * migration workshops - in the coming weeks, we will try to organize a workshop, or a webinar, or both or more, to help *you* migrate *your* project. Stay tuned !

See the release notes for more details:

    Hi Gregory,

it is really an outstanding new version! And a lot of work you've all done.
    My question:

I wanted to migrate from older versions ( website, dms, users, - content ) to 4.5.1. (A first project from 4.4.6)

What I found, after realizing that is a greater step ;-), was this page:

    http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/DEV/Migration+process+of+module+configuration+and+websites

I am really not sure whether or not I did found the right page. It seems a little bit complicated.
    Should I wait?

As you, Greg said in your posting:
    > we are offering three things

I would understand the cite as a message to wait a while.

    Best
    Hartmut

    Hartmut,

It's up to you ! Yes, that page seems to make the task a little daunting. Do you have a lot of custom modules or templates ?

If there's anything unclear in that page, or any other, leave comments, and we'll try to clarify. In the meantime, why don't you give it a shot ? Create a thread in the "help" forum (or user-list), and we'll take it from there and try to follow-up with you. The earlier, and the more, people try to update, the better we can target improvements to the doc :)

    Cheers,

    Hartmut,

the migration process seems complicated, but in fact it's easy ;-)
i you want to migrate the configuration of a module you have to follow these five steps
    http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/DEV/Migration+process+of+module+configuration+and+websites#Migrationprocessofmoduleconfigurationandwebsites-STKbasedmodule

And by the way, we are currently working on the migration module, if you checkout the trunk of the project
    http://svn.magnolia-cms.com/view/community/modules/magnolia-4-5-migration/trunk/src/main/resources/scripts/migration/from4_4To4_5/

You will find new files, in particularly:
    - Configuration.groovy, here you can configure the migration, it is the file to change
    - ConfiguredMigration.groovy, this is the migration script using the configuration, you have nothing to change here.

I suggest you to try out.
Setup a Mgnl 4.5 with the latest version of magnolia-4-5-migration and set in magnolia.properties the migration to false (so it wont run the script Migration.groovy).
Then try the new migration, once the configuration is done (Configuration.groovy) run the script ConfiguredMigration.groovy.

Do not hesitate to add your feedback in the project space http://jira.magnolia-cms.com/browse/MGNLMIGRATION

    Updated documentation will come soon!!

    Cheers,
    Sam
